The concept that the same shift towards on-demand services lies ahead for the era of multiscreen TV consumption has already grabbed the attention of various interested parties in the technology convergence and potential upside.

Audiences have now started to watch TV programs and other video entertainment in varied environments and on numerous gadgets such as cell or mobile telephones, desktops, laptops, PDAs, and various other gadgets, alongside conventional televisions. They include high-definition TV, streaming content, personal digital video recorders, voice, online features, and immediate technical assistance via alternative communication channels such as mobile phones, PDAs, global communication devices, etc.

The rise of IPTV everywhere makes its spread more common. If so, will this be enough to prompt regulatory adjustments?

We have no proof that IPTV has greater allure to the people who do not subscribe to cable or DTH. However, some recent developments have hindered IPTV expansion – and it is these developments that have led to tempering predictions on IPTV growth.

Meanwhile, the UK implemented a lenient regulatory approach and a forward-thinking collaboration with the industry.

3.Market Leaders and Distribution

In the British market, BT is the dominant provider in the UK IPTV market with a share of 1.18%, and YouView has a market share of 2.8%, which is the landscape of single and dual-play offerings. BT is typically the leader in the UK based on statistics, although it experiences minor shifts over time across the range of 7 to 9%.

In the United Kingdom, Virgin Media was the first to start IPTV through HFC infrastructure, followed by BT. Netflix and Amazon Prime are the strongest OTT services in the UK IPTV market. Amazon has its own set-top device-centered platform called Amazon Fire TV, similar to Roku, and has just begun operating in the UK. However, Netflix and Amazon are not available in any telecommunications provider networks.

In the United States, AT&T leads the charts with a share of 17.31%, surpassing Verizon’s FiOS at 16.88 percent. However, considering only DSL-based IPTV services, the leader is CenturyLink, trailing AT&T and Frontier, and Lumen.

Cable TV has the overwhelming share of the American market, with AT&T successfully attracting 16.5 million IPTV customers, primarily through its U-verse service and DirecTV service, which also is active in Latin America. The US market is, therefore, divided between the main traditional telephone companies offering IPTV services and modern digital entrants.

In Europe and North America, leading companies offer integrated service packages or a strategy focusing on loyal users for the majority of their marketing, promoting three and four-service bundles. In the United States, AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen depend on their proprietary infrastructure or traditional telephone infrastructure to deliver IPTV solutions, however on a lesser scale.

4.Subscription Types and Media Content

There are distinct aspects in the content offerings in the UK and US IPTV markets. The strength of the brands plays an essential role, alongside a product that has a cost-effective pricing and offers die-hard UK football supporters with an enticing extra service.

5.Emerging Technologies and Upcoming Innovations

5G networks, integrated with millions of IoT devices, have stirred IPTV development with the integration of AI and machine learning. Cloud computing is strongly supporting AI systems to enable advanced features. Proprietary AI recommendation systems are being widely adopted by content service providers to engage viewers with their own advantages. The video industry has been transformed with a fresh wave of innovation.

A higher bitrate, by increasing resolution and frame rate, has been a key goal in boosting audience satisfaction and attracting subscribers. The technological leap in recent years were driven by new standards developed by industry stakeholders.

The ever-evolving consumer psychology puts data at the center stage for every stakeholder. Legal boundaries would obstruct easy access to customer details; hence, user data safeguards would not be too keen on adopting new technologies that may compromise user safety. However, the existing VOD ecosystem indicates a different trend.

The IT security score is currently extremely low. Technological leaps and bounds have made cyber breaches more virtual than physical intervention, thereby favoring white-collar hackers at a larger scale than black-collar culprits.

With the advent of headend services, demand for IPTV has been increasing rapidly. Depending on user demands, these developments in technology are poised to redefine IPTV.
